5 Tips for Throwing a Sophisticated Southern Brunch

Hi Girls! Emily from Born on Fifth here to share some of my favorite tips and tricks for throwing a pretty party. It should be noted that when you have a Gang of talented women bringing their a-game to the party, it's much easier than when you're doing it solo. That said, if you are hosting an affair alone or are taking the reigns on a collaboration, here are some rules I live by:

Plan Ahead

Throwing a party with a mailed invite required? I like to start thinking about these affairs at least three to four months ahead of time. Sending something online? Two months will typically do!  Collaborating with a crew? No sweat! If everyone's involved planning month-out events is much easier.

Start with a Theme

I like to set the tone for the party in advance and carry it through with a cohesive aesthetic (if not theme) from invite to favor. For this brunch we went Sophisticated Southern and incorporated blue and white porcelain, mason jars and pops of orange to play into the Peach State we call home. Pro tip: ask guests to dress the part if you want your photos to pack an extra punch.

Establish Your Go-Tos

Even if you're not a professional planner (and I'm far from it!), figure out a vendor list and start putting these people on speed dial. Establish a working relationship with everyone from a florist, caterer and cake baker to a calligrapher and custom cocktail creator.

This list helps when you want to put something together quickly. It also helps you refine your own aesthetic over time. If you're a DIY'er, make boards of your tried and true recipes, sign ideas and display options so you're not scrambling at the last minute. Pro tip: also engage a photographer so you can focus on having fun and making sure the party is running smoothly.

Build Up Your Butler's Pantry (or Rent!)

For a long time I hesitated to throw parties because I knew I wanted it to look a certain way but I didn't have the right stuff. Now each time I entertain, I add to my collection, be it a pretty platter or new napkin rings. I also think renting directly from people who do this for a living and have collected all the elements is a brilliant work around. Hey, you can even rent your wardrobe so you're on theme for the affair as well!

Have Fun With It

The point of a party is to celebrate something...be it a new community of inspiring women or your daughter's first birthday. Try not to stress (which helps when you plan ahead...see Step 1!) and you can always have a glass of bubbly to calm pre-party nerves. I like to rely on Spotify or friends to help curate my playlists...music always get people going. On that note (pun intended!), who's ready to throw a shin dig?!
